Baltic Music Study Day

THE ROYAL MUSICAL ASSOCIATION and THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC OF LEEDS UNIVERSITY

PRESENT

A STUDY DAY ON BALTIC MUSIC

Date: SATURDAY 19th MAY 2007

Venue: The School of Music, University of Leeds, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds LS2 9JT

(Below is the original call for papers and other material relating to this event. A report on the study day, prepared by Natalie Mason, can be found here).

This study day is to be devoted to the music of the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia). The art and folk musics of these countries constitute some of the least studied European repertoires in the West. Until very recently, recordings and printed music were largely inaccessible. Understanding of their diverse musical heritages has been further impeded by difficulties of language and the period of Soviet occupation. During much of the 20th century, these countries shared significant experiences (independence, Soviet occupation, renewed independence and membership of the expanded EU), but nonetheless their histories are complex and divergent. Each has produced at least one contemporary composer who has achieved international recognition (Barkauskas, Vasks, Pärt…), but there is as yet little understanding of their historical and political context.

The day is to consist of individual presentations, a plenary discussion, and lecture-recitals. Our invited guest speaker is Dr. Jonas Bruveris (Vilnius) who will speak on 'Lithuanian Musicology Past and Present'. Speakers' biographies can be found here.
