Conducting

George Kennaway began conducting in 1990 when he was appointed conductor of the Airedale Symphony Orchestra. He studied conducting with Otmar Suitner at the Salzburg Mozarteum and with George Hurst at the Canford Summer School.

In 1991 he and the ASO won a Performing Right Society Enterprise award for a season which included the première of the Yorkshire composer William Baines's Symphony in C minor (1917). In subsequent years he conducted the State Symphony Orchestra of Kazakhstan (1997), the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan (1998), the Academic Symphony Orchestra of Nizhniy-Novgorod (2000), the Orchestra Sinfonica da Pescara (2000), the orchestra of the Dvarionas Music School (Vilnius) and the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra (2005). Since 1998 he has regularly conducted the Northern Baroque Orchestra, Rochdale. In 1998 he conducted on-screen in the film Hilary and Jackie (dir. Anand Tucker). With an ensemble drawn from the Orchestra of Opera North he conducted Pierrot Lunaire and The Soldier's Tale at Hope College Liverpool, the York Late Music Festival and the Leeds Royal Armouries Museum.
