Teaching

Over the last 30 years George Kennaway has taught the cello privately in all age groups and at levels from complete beginner to postgraduate. He has taught at Westminster College of Education and St. Benet's Hall (Oxford), and the College of Ripon & York St. John (York), as well as schools in Newcastle, York, Leeds and Bingley. He coached cello sections in the Strathclyde Region Youth Orchestra, Ryedale Festival Youth Orchestra, Sunderland Youth Orchestra and the Leeds Repertoire Orchestra. From 1999 until 2003 he took part in the East London Late Starters Orchestra Summer School at Bretton Hall, near Wakefield, where he taught classes in baroque playing, conducting, chamber music and orchestral playing.

YLSS Playday In action with YLSS

In 1999 he founded Yorkshire Late Starters Strings . This is a string orchestra for adults who have either taken up an instrument later in life or have rediscovered it having last played when at school. The only entry requirement is your own enthusiam! YLSS has grown considerably and is now a large thriving organisation which meets weekly in north Leeds and runs one-day and weekend courses, playing music from the early 17th century to the present day. Where necessary, simplified parts are prepared so whatever your standard you can enjoy playing in a larger group. The YLSS website tells you more, and there's an application form there as well.
